Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as Major and commander of the 100th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Chattanooga, Tennessee on November 25, 1863. His citation reads "While in command of the regiment bravely exposed himself to the fire of the enemy, encouraging and cheering his men". His Medal was awarded to him on August 24, 1896. He was captured by Confederate forces on July 22, 1864 during the Atlanta Campaign. He was one of two 100th Indiana soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the other being Captain Charles W. Brouse of Company K).
