In October 1855, he fought a duel with his brother-in-law, Dr. Kirk, of Savannah on Cockspur Island (Fort Pulaski). Three shots were fired. Chaplin was wounded in the foot; Dr. Kirk was killed in the duel.
He was a Lieut. in the U.S. Navy prior to the Civil War, then he fought in the Civil War as a member of the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery.
