Bio for Mary
Mary Alice Holt was one of eight children born 11 November 1835 to William and Elizabeth Holt. She lived in Strawberry Township, Lawrence County Arkansas. At age 17, Mary wed Thomas Norris on 4 July 1852 and they had three children while living in Arkansas. By 1860 Thomas and Mary had moved to Collin County Texas and sometime in 1861, Mary and Thomas had a fourth child, a daughter; Sarah A.
Presumably, Mary's husband Thomas died after the 1860 census and possibly while serving in the American civil war. Some researchers link a Thomas Norris who served in G Company, 2nd Tennessee Calvary and died on 14 January 1863 during the civil war. He is was buried in the Nashville National Cemetery, Nashville Tennessee. This Thomas Norris, born approximately 1838, is surely not the husband of Mary Holt Norris Hudson. The "Find A Grave" memorial is maintained by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and asserts that his widow was Winney Norris. There are many records of a Thomas Norris in the U.S. Civil War Pension Index (1861-1934). It will take more research to determine what actually happened to Mary's husband Thomas Norris but undoubtedly, he died before November 1865, when Mary remarried. After Thomas Norris' death Mary moved back to Lawrence County Arkansas with her 4 children and married James Hudson as evidenced in the 1870 U.S. Census for Strawberry Township, Lawrence County Arkansas and the Arkansas County Marriages Index (1837-1957) which records a marriage on 3 November 1865 between a Mary A. Norris, age 29 and a James Hutson (Hudson), age 27 in Lawrence Arkansas.
In the 1870 U.S. Census for Strawberry Township, Lawrence County Arkansas, Mary A., age 35, married to a James F Hudson, age 33, have 3 children; Lee E., age 4; Mary E., age 2, and James W., age 1 month. Also listed are 4 other children living with them; Martha J. Norris, age 16; Thomas J. Norris, age 15; Laura F. Norris, age 11; and Sarah A. Norris, age 9. The names of the Norris children living with James and Mary Hudson match the names of the Norris children in the 1860 census for Thomas and Mary Norris providing evidence that this is the Mary (Holt) Norris who was married to Thomas Norris recorded in the 1860 U.S. Census for Precinct number 6 in Collin County Texas.
In the 1880 U.S. Census for Precinct 106, Denton County Texas, Mary and James Hudson have 8 children; two of the 4 Norris children are still living with them but the census recorder listed their surnames as Hudson (Laura A. (20), and Sarah A (18)). The names of the Hudson children as well as the two Norris daughters match the listing in the 1870 U.S. Census for Mary and James Hudson in Lawrence County Arkansas. All of Mary and James children were reported in the census as being born in Arkansas except for Absolom, age 3, recorded as born in Texas. This means that Mary and James most likely moved to Denton County Texas before 1877.
By 1910, Mary, age 74 and James Hudson, age 71 are living with their son James W and Florah R Hudson according to the 1910 U.S. Census for Precinct 7, Fannin County Texas. James Hudson apparently died shortly after the census on 16 June 1910.
Mary A Hudson, at age 75, died on 1 July 1911 according to the Texas Death Certificates (1903-1982) and the Texas Death Index (1903-2000) records. Mary is buried in the Lamasco Cemetery, Fannin County Texas.
