Death at her home on Church Street today, claimed Mrs. Bettie Self Cheshire, 94, wife of the late James William Cheshire, which followed several weeks of illness.
A native of Henry County and life-long resident of the county and city, Mrs. Cheshire was one of Martinsvilles' oldest residents.
Mrs. Cheshire, the daughter of Silas N. Self and Mary Jane Jones Self, was active in the Woman's Society of Christian Service in her church; member and former president of Mildred Lee Chapter, U.D.C., member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary here; and a Gold Star Mother.
Her husband was one of Martinsvilles' pioneer retail grocery merchants, having conducted his business on Bridge Street.
