In 1913, the "absolutely fireproof" Winecoff Hotel was designed and built without sprinklers, fire escapes, or even an alarm system. On Saturday, December 7th, 1946, the unthinkable happened and one hundred and nineteen people lost their lives leaping from windows, suffocating from smoke, and being burned alive.

Hardy was an amateur photographer who won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Photography after taking a picture of a woman plunging from a window of the burning Winecoff Hotel, his picture became the defining image of the nation's deadliest hotel fire. Mr. Hardy died on December 5th, 2007, his funeral services were held on December 7th, 2007 on the 61st, anniversary of the Winecoff fire.

Arnold E. Hardy was an amateur photographer who won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Photography after taking a picture of a woman plunging from a window of the burning Winecoff Hotel, his picture became the defining image of the nation's deadliest hotel fire. Mr. Hardy died on December 5th, 2007, his funeral services were held on December 7th, 2007 on the 61st, anniversary of the Winecoff fire.
