Edna Marie Scherer, 94, of Olney, died at 1:55 a.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009, at St. Anthony's de Greeff Hospice House, near St. Louis, Mo.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Gary Ryden officiating. Burial will be in Crest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery in rural Claremont.

Mrs. Scherer was born on June 7,1915, in Richland County, the daughter of Roy and Ethel (Gerber) Boatman. She married Virgil Scherer on June 11,1936, in Union City, Tenn. He preceded her in death on October 9,1987.

Marie and her husband, Virgil, ran Scherer's Ice Cream for several years in Olney, Lawrenceville, Flora and Effingham.

Marie also worked at Olney Shoe Factory and later for Spieth Studio for many years and she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Olney.

Marie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother bringing joy to those who knew her. She was a 4-H club leader for the Snip and Snack 4-H Club for many years. Her talent excelled in cake making. She was also talented in quilt making and sewing and was known for her abilities in remaking, repairing and dressing dolls in elegant costumes. Her passion and pride was her antique doll collection and many knew her as "The Doll Lady.

Mrs. Scherer is survived by daughter, Yvonne Meckfessel and her husband, Gary, of Troy; son, Cliff Scherer and wife, Jane, of Brooktondale, N.Y.; grandsons, Brent Pitts and his wife, Sheri, of Olney, and Eric Pitts and his wife, Amber, of Olney; two granddaughters, Larissa Scherer and Amanda Scherer, both of New York; five great-grandchildren, Brittany, Chelsea, Sydney, Clayton and Hayley Pitts; sister, Alberta Whitaker, of Robinson; brothers, Virgil Boatman and Ray Boatman and his wife, Darlene, all of Bridgeport; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil; grandson, Jason Pitts; brothers, Russell and Ralph Boatman; and sister, Viola Newman.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hospice of Southeastern Illinois or Caring Bridge.
