Published in the Piscatatquis (ME) Observer on 19 Jul 1849 p2: "FATAL CASUALTY---While some workmen were employed in endeavoring to open one of the upper gates on the Kennebec Dam, on the 5th inst. and were pulling upon a rope attached to a staple affixed to the upper part of the gate post, the staple gave way, and a young man named Nelson Brown, of Liberty, following up the gain by the surges of the men above, with a block, was caught by his head between the gates and instantly killed, the gates shutting together on the giving away of the staple with great force. His body was conveyed to his relatives in Liberty for burial. [Kennebec Journal]"
