BINZ, ARTHUR JACOB
Arthur Jacob Binz was born in Houston May 1st, 1875. He attended the public schools of his native city and afterwards took a course of instruction at St. Edward's College, Austin. After leaving college, Mr. Binz returned to Houston and took a position in the South Texas National Bank in 1892. In various capacities he continued with this bank until May 1st, 1899, when he took charge of the Binz Building and for several years devoted his time to the management of his own and his family's interests. In 1902 he formed a partnership with J. J. Settegast, Jr., in the real estate business, and since that time the firm has extensively operated in Houston real property.
Mr. Binz is First Vice President of the Tel-Electric Co., Secretary Treasurer of the Houston Car Wheel and Machinery Co., and is actively identified with other enterprises in this city. He takes an active part in social matters and is a member of the Elks, Houston and Country Clubs, also of the Rotarians and Woodmen of the world.
On January 18th, 1899, Mr. Binz married Miss Tina A. Peters of Galveston, Texas, and has two children.
Jacob Binz, the father of A. J. Binz, was one of the most respected of Houston's earlier residents. He was a native of Germany, having been born in that country September 26, 1828; died March 23, 1913. It was Jacob Binz who conceived the idea of the first office building for Houston. Reading the future from afar he saw what the city would need, and accordingly gave instructions that resulted in the erection of the Binz Building, at Main Street and Texas Avenue. In 1902 he retired from the active business world, placing them in the hands of his son, Arthur J. Binz, and his son-in-law, J. J. Settegast, Jr. (Source: The Book of Texas, A Newspaper Reference Work, published by the Austin Statesman (1914)
