Daniel spent his childhood on a farm his parents owned in Ballville. He attended a common school on the southeast corner of their farm, and also at Green Spring, Fremont, and Clyde. His father having perished at Andersonville prison in 1864, Daniel early learned those lessons of industry, economy and thrift from his widowed mother, in the management and care of the farm, and in raising of livestock, which were of great service to him in after life.

After his marriage to Etta, he farmed for two years and then decided to embark in the brick and tile business. He began in a small way, and, as the demands for his tile increased, enlarged his facilities from year to year, until in 1893 he gave constant employment to 19 hands, several teams, and turned off about 500,000 tile, of all sorts and sizes, adapted to the needs of the farmers in his vicinity. He also did some shipping of tile abroad. He was led to engage in the brick and tile business from having heard in his childhood a remark made by his father to the effect that if he ever built a new house on that farm it should be made of brick burned by himself, as he had noticed that the clay mortar used in the construction of a log cabin turned to a bright red color when the cabin was burned.

Mr. Potter was a member of Green Spring Lodge, IOOF and in politics, a Republican.

Daniel married Etta Huss on December 25, 1881 in Green Springs. They were married by L.D. Ingle, VDM.

Daniel and Etta had 5 children: Mabel Ellen, Henry Jervis, James Chaplin, Merritt Paul, and Myron Timothy.
