Pipe-smoking, "Full-blooded" Native American Indian,* remarried widow, & illiterate homemaker. Seven children—two sons to first husband, James Sturgeon, & three sons & two daughters to second, John Jacob Brand. Twenty-seven grandchildren. Referred to herself as a "Yankee" or "Yanktease."* Whether she was referring to the name of her Indian tribe or her allegiance to the Union is uncertain. Facial features resembled those of Western Indian tribes such as the American Blackfeet, but photographed circa 1915 wearing a calico tear dress unique to the Cherokee. First husband, a Union soldier, died in 1864 serving in the Civil War.** Remarried in 1866 to another Union soldier, her husband of 54 years, "Jacob" Brand.
