Lavada Carter, age 72, was called home to be with her Lord on Saturday evening, May 15th after suffering a stroke a couple of days before. She was the wife of the late Luther Carter and was born Rhoda Lavada Wilcox. She went by Lavada or "Vada". She was survived by son William Earl Carter and daughters Laverne Carter Oliver and Eleanor Carter Thomas. She was preceded in death by her first son Royce Vance Carter in 1936. She and Luther Carter were married October 24, 1920.

Born in Nichols, Georgia, she moved to Portsmouth, Virginia in 1939 with her husband and children. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Lavada was the daughter of James M. Wilcox and Lavinia Browning Wilcox. Her paternal grandparents were William Jasper Wilcox (1867-death unknown) and Rhoda Smith Wilcox. Both are supposedly buried at a Wilcox Family Cemetery in Jeff Davis or Bacon County, Georgia which to date is unconfirmed.

Lavada's family genealogy on her father's side dates back to Thomas Wilcox, Sr (1784-1848) who was her great grandfather. He moved from North Carolina and died in Georgia.
