Son of James & Mary Freeman Aliff; he was named after James' father. William was a 5th generation Aliff:
James (4th), Thomas E. (3rd), Thomas (2nd) and Thomas, the first to come to America the New World.

The 1850 US Census found him at age 17 living with his parents in Roanoke: 1850 US Census
William married Sirilda Reynolds 1859 in Virginia. They had several children:

The 1870 US Census [also mis-spelled his name as Wm Alif] lists William and Serilda as living at Marsh Fork with children Delitha, Penina, Robert, Mary, and William Patterson Aliff. Wm Sr's parents, James and Mary Aliff were living next door: 1870 Census
William & Serilda's son William Patterson Aliff married Mahala Artie Beckelheimer in Jan 1896, Dora Alsie Clay in Aug 1898 and Lula Pearl Parker in Apr 1913.
