She was born Turvanda Najarian in Malatya, Turkey to Hagop and Varter Mardigian Najarian. She arrived at Ellis Island on July 11, 1910 and married Avedis Sookiasian five days later on July 16. She joined her brother Khoren had been living with Avedis, also from Malatya, at 815 Columbia Avenue in Philadelphia. Her mother was listed as her nearest relative back in Malatya, implying her father might have already died and there is no record of her mother ever making it to America. In records like immigration and marriage she is called Nano, perhaps a shortening of the name. Nano became pregnant a few months later and died the next year a week and a half after giving birth to her daughter. The cause of death was puerperal septicemia caused by the delivery (also called blood poisoning). The death certificate refers to her as Anna, which would be an Americanizing of her name. Her daughter, named Turvanda after her, died a month and a half later of enteritis. They were both buried at the American Mechanics Cemetery (Division A, Section 16, Lot 28, Grave 1) which was later closed and they were moved to an unmarked grave at Philadelphia Memorial Park in 1951.

The grave can be found by going to the right after exiting the office, down to the green fence with a building behind it. Straight ahead is a road lined by trees, which is followed down until a last name plaque in the ground between the road and tree saying 'Scull'. The grave is on the far side of the tree, past which is another plaque saying Huston and then a button in the ground marking off lots 23, 24, 25, and 26.
