New Zealand Prime Minister. Born in London, the only practising Jew to have been Prime Minister of a country (other than Israel). Went to New Zealand in 1861, where he founded a newspaper. Entered politics, becoming the leading force and eventually Premier in a successful administration that lasted from 1869-76. Returned to London, but after failing to enter the House of Commons, returned to New Zealand in 1884 where the second phase of his career was markedly less successful. Came back to London in 1887, and lived the rest of his life in relative obscurity and poverty.
