Explorer, Missionary, Map Maker. He was born in Varazdin, Croatia and attended the Jesuit seminary in Graz, Austria where he was ordained. After deciding to become a missionary, his order sent him to Baja California arriving here in 1726. Konscak spent the rest of his life here baptizing the Indians. He was an expert mathematician and engineer, building roads, dams and developing mines. He was above all an explorer and map maker. During his trips he drew a map which conclusively confirmed Baja was a peninsula and not an island. This paved the way for Spanish and Christian expansion into what is now the state of California. This missionary is memorialized by a group of low rocky islands located in the northern Gulf of California: Consag Rocks. He died of consumption and was buried by the Indians in the Santa Gertrudis Mission Cemetery which he founded.
