John served in the Civil War from 1 Jun 1861 to 5 Sep 1864, in Company A, 25th Illinois Regiment. He was wounded at the battle of Stone River and taken prisoner by the Confederates. He later became a minister for the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, first at Colesburg, IA, and later at Lerna, IL. He and his wife, Nancy Elizabeth (Rogers) married 7 June 1874 at Lincoln, Logan, Illinois and had seven children: Arthur Lee, Loura Etta, John Edgar, Grace Ellen, Howard Irwin, Herbert Ray, and Paul Allen.
