William Harry Austin Sr died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 85.
Born Jan. 5, 1924, in Chester, to the late Benjamin Franklin Austin and Melissa Helena Stevens, he graduated from Stevensville. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, stationed in the Atlantic. When he returned to Grasonville, he owned three trucks for five years. Mr . Austin then worked for the state of Maryland in the Department of Game and Inland Fish as a warden and then as a Policeman at the port of Baltimore. While he worked for the State of Maryland, he Oystered in the local waters. He retired in 1991. In 1996, he moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., and he married Gail Lee Grierson on April 25, 1997.
He was a member of the Grasonville VFW 7464 and the American Legion Post 297 in Baltimore.
He is survived by two daughters, Julia Lynn Austin Walters of Centreville and Jane Ellen Labrie of Queenstown; two sons , William Harry Austin Jr. of Sterling, Colo., and Paul Benjamin Austin of Maine; a nephew Eugene Franklin Austin; three stepdaughters, Angela M. Poole of Huntingtown, Melissa D. Aspinall of Huntingtown and Christie A. Snyder of Rutherford, N.C.; and six grandchildren, Justin, Shelbi, Cody, Tara, Jared, and Joey.
