George L. Catlin was born to Cyrus and Catherine Pilcher Catlin on December 21, 1823 in Athens County, Ohio. He married Mary Elizabeth Anderson on January 29, 1845. Two children were born of this marriage: Diantha D. Catlin (11-24-1845 – 1918) and George W. Catlin (11-23-1852 – 9-22-1906). Sometime in 1859 Mary Elizabeth died in Leon, Decateur County, Iowa, just north of the Missouri border. We next find George at Kansas City, Missouri, in 1861. He is a corporal in Van Horn's Battalion, Federal Reserve Corps and is with the battalion in several skirmishes and the Battle of Lexington, MO, in September of that year. The fight at Lexington was a Confederate victory, the entire Union force being taken prisoner. Prisoners were paroled and George was leaving Kansas City when he was pursued by "bushwhackers" who were Confederate sympathizers that would rob and murder Union people. George refers to this event in his application for a veteran's pension. After the Civil War George returned to Charleston, Coles County, Illinois and partnered with Benjamin Maxwell in building houses; he is listed in public records as a carpenter. On March 23, 1876, George and Eunice Maxwell were married. Two children were born of this marriage: Kitty A. Catlin (3-11-1877 – 1930) and Clarence L. Catlin (8-8-1880 – 8-1-1942) Eunice passed away in 1902. George L. Catlin died on January 30, 1906 at the Soldier's Home in Danville, Illinois.
