WAR DEAD FROM AUGUSTA AND VICINITY REACH CALIFORNIA
AUGUSTA--The bodies of two Augusta boys were among the 2,792 which have arrived at San Francisco from the Pacific theater on the USAT Cardinal O'Connell as well as those of a Winthrop youth and a Richmond veteran. From San Francisco, the bodies will be taken to the Schenectady, N.Y., Depot or to Brooklyn.

The Alfred W. Maxwell Jr., Post No. 40, American Legion, Winthrop will have charge of services for the youth for whom the unit was named. Alfred W. Maxwell Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred W. Maxwell of 44 High Street, Winthrop, when his body arrives. Entering the Marine Corps Jan. 14, 1942, he was killed Sept. 10 of that year on Guadalcanal at the age of 21. He and 9 other marines were assigned to a work detail at the Guadalcanal airfield, when they were attacked by enemy bomber. All ten were killed in action. He was awarded the Purple Heart. The young man was graduated from Winthrop High School and attended Hebron Academy.
