Louis was born and raised on his father's farm in Hamlin, Maine. When his father lost his farm in 1925, he decided to move the family to the mills of Lawrence, Mass. Louis had no interest in going there, and chose to move to his uncle's farm in Montana, instead. There he took an interest in beekeeping. He soon began wintering in Los Angles, where he worked as a sign painter. He eventually settled in San Francisco, though he retained a close connection with his uncle's family even after his passing, choosing to be buried here with them.
