Harley was our first budgie. He soon became flock leader when others came home to keep him company. He was so gentle and never bit you. He was born in Texas and arrived in the Eastern part of the US, in a cage 'packed' with colorful budgies. Out of all the colors, I chose Little Harley. His legs were shorter than other budgies which made him very special. He was named Harley Davidson by his new dad.

Harley didn't make a sound for a couple of weeks and I was concerned. Probably due to being in a huge flock of birds and then being by himself. In a couple of weeks he was put into a larger cage and he began to pull out all his feathers. The next day I put him back in the smaller white cage and he was fine. The newer cage was black and I soon learned Harley was terrified of the color black. But after a while he got over that. After a few weeks his wings were clipped and he became depressed and would sit and not even move for hours. He was pitiful to watch as he seemed so sad.

Back to the shop I went and brought home a friend for him, Dakota Sky. When he saw Dakota he began doing back flips and all kinds of crazy acrobatic movements. This was to get Dakota's attentions so he wouldn't leave. Harley never made any such motions again and of course Dakota stayed to become Harley's new and best friend. They were buddies and Harley never left Dakota's side until Lil Bill came along. Even though Harley and Lil Bill became mates, Harley always shared a special bond with Dakota Sky.

March 2010:

Harley had been sleeping a lot and began staying fluffed up, which means something was wrong.

Xrays showed a huge mass in his chest. Everything was tried to keep him with us, but nothing helped. The day came when he could no longer eat and couldn't even hold his wings up. His doctor said it was time to let him go.

The last trip to the drs office is forever embedded in my heart and mind. I wanted to hold him close but he wanted to sit on the swing like a "big guy". I wanted to tell him for the last time how much I loved him and how much I was going to miss him. So many things that I wanted to say but couldn't because I was crying my heart out and the tears wouldn't stop. This "lil guy" was so much braver than I.

Our hearts were broken and we still grieve. He was a "lil guy" but he was loved so very much.

Harley was Sunshine's brother.
Harley was Lil Bill's mate.
