US Senator. A native of Sweden, he and his family arrived in the United States in 1891, then moved from Wisconsin to Minnesota two years later. In 1912, he began his political career when he joined the Minnesota Farmer-Labor Party. The following year, he was appointed as the Leader of the Minnesota Branch of the American Society of Equity. In 1915, he was elected into the Minnesota House of Representatives, serving the position until 1919, when he was elected into the Minnesota State Senate. On July 16, 1923, he was elected to the United States Senate via the Farmer-Labor General Ticket following the death of Minnesota Senator Knute Nelson. He served on the seat until March 4, 1925, shortly after losing his bid for reelection the previous year. From there, he returned home and spent nearly a decade as a farmer, lumberjack and millhand for both his family and local community before returning to politics in 1932. On March 4, 1933, he was elected into the U.S. House of Representatives and served until January 3, 1935. Months before his passing, he had finished his two-year term as the Minnesota State Supervisor of Public Stockyards. As of 2020, he is the only Swedish-born person to have served in the U.S. Senate.
