A Crossville man and wife were killed and a Crossville relative and Lebanon truck driver injured about 5:50 a.m. Friday in a car-truck wreck at the intersection of US 70 and SR 109 about 7 miles west of Lebanon.
The dead are Carl K Broyles, 66 and his wife, Bessie Mae Broyles, 66, of Jamestown Highway. Injured were Mrs Broyles sister, Mrs Maggie Monnette, 64, and Horace D Phillips, 30, Rt 3, Lebanon, driver of the Krispy Kream doughnut truck.
Mrs Broyles was dead on arrival at McFarland Hospital in Lebanon and her husband died there some 7 hours later. Mrs Monnette and Phillips were admitted to the hospital with cuts and bruises.
All occupants of the 2 vehicles were said to have been thrown to the pavement in the collision, Phillips' van being knocked from the highway and overturned. Mrs Broyles, traveling north 109 toward Gallatin from I-40, ran a stop sign, officers said.
The intersection has been the scene of at least 8 fatalities in recent months - one wreck claiming 5 lives and all of them occurring during daylight hours - mostly because of its geographic nature, which throws both flows of traffic upon each other suddenly.
Funeral services for Mr and Mrs Broyles were conducted Sunday afternoon at Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta, with burial in Highland Cemetery there.
They are survived by a son, Kimmer Broyles, Atlanta. She is survived by another sister, Mrs Lola Crider, Fulton, Ky; he is survived by 2 sisters, Mrs Clayton Bandy, Cleveland, Tn; Mrs Mildred Maple, Knoxville.
