James Benson Chenoweth was born to Miles A. Chenowerh and Rebecca April 22, 1872, in Marion, Ill., and departed this life at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 1939, at his farm home one mile north of Gove where he has lived since 1906 with the exception of about two years. He came with his parents to Lyon county, Kansas, when he was nine years old. He was married Aug. 1, 1894, to Olive May Gilbert. To this union two children were born. They resided at Delava, Kan., until Feb. 1906 when they moved to Gove county where they have resided most of the time unitl the present.

He united with the M.E. Church at the age of 26 and was from then on a member on the active roll. At times he was on the offical board and served for several years as superintendent of the Sunday Schools.

He was postmaster for eight and one-half years, under the Wilson administration. He was elected Clerk of the Court for his third term which he was not able to complete.

He joined the Odd Fellows Lodge in 1920, and the Masons in 1921. He was also a member of the Gove Chapter of the Eastern Star. In all of these he held the highest possible positions, He was very efficient in lecture work, at times being called to other towns to assist in that part of the lodge ritual.

He is survived by his wife, Olive and was preceded in death by his father, mother, and one sister. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, two brothers, Ed of San Benito, Texas, Irvin of Del Norte, Colo., one sister Mrs. Dora Hebrank of Council Grove, Kan.; his son Orval of Grinnell with four children; and the daughter, Ruby Schultz of Omaha, Nebr., and other relatives and a host of friends.
