Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Judge. When the Civil War began, he was commissioned as a Captain with the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Colonel and assigned to organize and command the 83rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The regiment was formed at Camp Dennison in August, 1862 and participated in building defenses for Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky anticipating an attack by Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith. The regiment became known as the "Greyhound Regiment". He received a promotion from Colonel to Brevet Brigadier General of U. S. Volunteers for meritorious service on March 26, 1865. After the war, he returned to his native Cincinnati, Ohio and became the City Solicitor in 1871. He was later elected as a county judge.
