Economist. He is recognized as an English economist who was one of the most influential economists of his time and considered the founder of modern economics. His 1890 textbook on the subject, "Principles of Economics," became the standard for teaching economics for generations. He was educated at St. Johns College at Cambridge, majoring in philosophy with an interest in mathematics. His desire to improve the conditions for the working class led him to economics. He was elected in 1865 to a fellowship at St John's College at Cambridge, and became lecturer in the moral sciences in 1868. In 1877, he married one of his students, Mary Paley, which caused him to have to leave Cambridge. His wife became a pioneer in female economists. He became the first principal at University College in Bristol. In 1885 he became professor of political economy at Cambridge, where he remained until his retirement in 1908. Besides "Principles of Economics," he published four other textbooks. He and his wife had no children. He taught many leading economists, including Lord Keynes, who wrote a memoir of him.
