Joseph Barnard, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hoke) Barnard, was a clergyman who married Martha Grey Grubb in 1862 and had at least four children. The family lived in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois before settling in Madison, Indiana.
Dr. Barnard came to Madison in 1883 as the minister at the 2nd Presbyterian Church. He served 21 years and made the church one of the most influential in Southern Indiana. He continued to serve as supply pastor and moderator of session meetings in both Madison Presbyterian churches until the 1920s.
