Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy as West Point, New York in 1829 and served as Second Lieutenant in the 3rd United States Artillery on topographical duty until he resigned from the Army in 1831. From 1833 to 1861, he was professor of mathematics and philosophy at Kenyon College, Ohio and proprietor of the Kokosing Iron Works, Knox County, Ohio. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed assistant Adjutant-General of the Ohio Commissary in May, 1861 and as Adjutant-General in July. In July 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on special duty as assistant to the Secretary of War at the War Department, Washington DC and served until he resigned in 1863. After his war service, he became president of the Chicago Steel Works in 1873 and was a professor of experimental philosophy at West Point untill he retired in 1881.
