Robert, the son of Joseph W. Challenger and Margaret S. Challenger of West Mifflin PA, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 12, 1966 in Chicago IL. He arrived in Vietnam on March 13, 1968, and was assigned to H&S Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

A patrol from Company C, were on a road sweep of Route 4 near the village complex of Trung An in Dien Ban District when they were hit by hostile small arms fire from three different positions. During a brief fire fight two Marines were killed and one man was wounded. Cpl Challenger was one of the casualties; he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire.
