Cassidy Austin was climbing with a friend in the Sunset Campground Waterfall on Tuesday afternoon when she fell from the steep, rocky ledge at the top off the falls to the stream below. She suffered major head and chest injuries and was knocked unconscious.

Austin's companion apparently pulled her from the water, then "ran down barefoot, two miles to call the paramedics.

Davis County paramedics and rescue crews arrived on the scene to carry the girl to a medical helicopter.

But they decided she needed help even faster, and called in a helicopter equipped with a hoist -- the first time LDS Hospital has used the equipment for an emergency rescue.

The helicopter managed to pull Austin out, carrying her and a paramedic two miles before landing to pull them into the chopper. But pilot Bill Winn said her injuries were so severe she could not be saved.

Cassidy Austin died at about 5 a.m. Wednesday at University Hospital.

Our beautiful Cassidy was tragically taken from us on May 30, 2001.

Cassidy was born December 1, 1983. Cassidy completed her Junior year at Viewmont High School where she was an honor roll student. She was loved and cherished by all who knew her. Although she lived just seventeen short years, Cassidy loved life and lived it to the fullest.

Cassidy was a faithful member of the LDS church. She loved completing scrapbooks and water sports. She had many wonderful friends who brought an incredible amount of joy to her life. Cassidy was a sweet spirit who would do anything for those she loved. She loved her car, a 1968 VW Beetle which was a family heirloom and belonged to her great-grand mother. Cassidy wanted to be a neonatal nurse, but she didn't have that chance. Instead, she gave her organs so others could live.

Cassidy had two wonderful parents and a brother who loved her very much. She spent many hours with family and grandparents who also felt much joy in her presence. Cassidy will be greatly missed but her spirit will live on. She will never be forgotten and we will always remember her in our hearts.

She is survived by her parents, Todd and Colette Austin, her brother Chad, her grandparents Bruce and Leora Austin, Colleen Richins, Great-grandmothers Velma Hemmingsen, Blanch Richins and Mary Liston, Her aunts and uncles, Randy (Gloria) Austin, Jedd (Raquel) Austin, and Shane (Kathryn) Richins. Her cousins Samantha Austin, Ashlee Richins, Conner Richins, Sydney Austin and Cy Austin and numerous extended family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her great grandfathers, Elmer Richins and Myron Liston. She is also preceded in death by hergrandfather, Wayne Richins who is luckily holding her now.

Services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 12 Noon at the Farmington South Stake Center at 695 South 200 East where friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Interment at Farmington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Cassidy's honor to Zions First National Bank, 500 North Main Street, Bountiful, Utah. The family would like to express its appreciation to the University of Utah trauma team and the many family members and friends who gave their support. In tribute to Cassidy, wear her favorite color purple.
