The 37-year old Jersey City, New Jersey resident was a supervisory computer specialist in the New York regional office, US Census Bureau. She was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico to Juan and Irma Martínez. The family also included sons Juan Jr. and Reinaldo and daughter Lourdes Lebrón. In 1986, Ms. Martínez earned a degree in computer science and business from the University of Puerto Rico, graduating first in her class. Before moving to New York in 1987 she taught computer science at two Puerto Rican universities. She started with the Census in 1988. She liked to relax by cooking, playing tennis and baseball and cheering for the New York Yankees. She was traveling to San Francisco with Marion Britton to attend a computer operations conference. On September 11, 2001, she wore a ball cap to the airport that belonged to her life partner, Angela López. At the time, Ms. López teased her about taking her ball cap but afterwards she said, "Now I'm glad she had something of me with her." (Bio by: Melanie)
