Services for Velma Lee Reynolds, 79, of Vanleer, are scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Taylor Funeral Home chapel, with Rev. Mathew Perumpally officiating. Interment will follow in the Reynolds Family Cemetery on Wolf Branch Road in Vanleer. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.

Mrs. Reynolds, a native of Louisville, Ky., passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at the Alive Hospice residence at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.

Velma graduated as the Class of 1949 salutatorian from Corydon High School in Corydon, Ind. She married Paul Calvin Reynolds and lived the life of a military wife and mother for many years, before coming back to settle in her husband's family community of Vanleer.

In addition to being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, she worked and retired as bookkeeper for Interstate Packaging Co. She loved and adopted many animals, especially dogs, and they became her babies. Never idle, even when relaxing, she made many quilts and other handcrafted needlework and gave many of them away to those she loved. Velma was a woman of great courage and faith, and though private and unassuming in many ways, she was a rock and fortress for her husband, their children and her extended family. She will be loved and greatly missed by those who knew her best.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 60 years; son, Steve Reynolds and his spouse Brenda, of Hartselle, Ala.; daughters, Jane Edwards and her spouse Tom, of Vanleer, and Gerry Browder and her spouse Bill, of State College, Pa.; brothers, William Shawler, of Louisville, Ky., Charles Shawler, of Corydon, Ind., and Paul Fredrick Shawler, of Jeffersonville, Ind.; sister, Margaret Kendall, of Corydon, Ind.; and seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Beverly Fredrick and Winnie Lea Flowers Shawler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Dickson County.
