Michigan Governor. Relocating to Michigan, he established a career in education, teaching school, plus serving as a high school principal, a education supervisor and superintendent of schools. He was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, (1897-98, 1905-08), a member of the Michigan State Senate, (1909-10) and was Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, (1915-21, 1927-33, 39). With the death of Governor Frank D. Fitzgerald, Dickinson was appointed as a Republican the 37th Governor of Michigan, serving (1939-41). While in office, legislation was sanctioned that made it mandatory for public school teachers to take a loyalty oath to the government and the Michigan National Guard was activated for service in World War II. He died at age 84 in Charlotte, Michigan.
