MISS EDNA MAY GIVENS, A RETIRED BANK OF CARTHAGE EMPLOYEE, DIES
Miss Edna May Givens, well known Carthage resident and a retired Bank of Carthage employee, died at 8:10 p.m. Monday in Freeman Hospital, Joplin. Her home was in the Colonial Apartments.
She was ill two weeks and was a patient eight days in the Joplin hospital.
Miss Givens, who was on the Bank of Carthage staff 38 years as savings teller and manager of the safe deposit department retired July 1, 1954.
Her first venture in the business field was with the Morris Goldstein jewelry store here. Later she was with the Business Men's League, a forerunner of the present Chamber of Commerce. In 1916 she accepted a post with the Bank of Carthage.
Miss Givens was born September 23, 1886 in Augusta, Kansas and when she was a young girl her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William L. Givens, came to Carthage where the daughter was reared and educated. She was graduated from Carthage Senior High School in the class of 1903.
Her parents, a sister, Mrs. Clara H. Smith, and a brother, Thad R. Givens, preceded her in death.
Miss Givens was a member of the First Presbyterian church and the Carthage Business and Professional Women's Club and was a member of the Carthage Soroptimist Club until her retirement from business.
Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Thomas Platt, 1514 River and five cousins, Miss Katherine Ground, Kansas City; Mrs. S. A. Garnett, Phoenix, AZ.; Mrs. E. C. Meservy, Jr. Kansas City; Mrs. Harold Vick, Sedalia; and John W. Ground of Joplin.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ulmer Funeral home. The Rev. James M. Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. The body will be placed in Oak Crest Abbey at Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mill Anderson, Herbert Smith and A. H. Moorman, all of the Bank of Carthage; Claude Morgan, Frank Williams, Jr. and S. R. Morrow, Jr. The body was placed in Oak Crest Abbey, Park Cemetery.
Members of the Carthage Business and Professional Women's Club attended the services in a group.
