Enlisted on March 30th, 1864, for three years service at the age of 18, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company G of the 82nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He served with the regiment throughout its campaigns and was mustered out of service with his company on July 24th, 1865.

Three headstones: Two marble stones inscribed "Tumbleson" and Philippa Hofer Doyle", and one granite stone erected John Michael Doyle, Pvt. Co. 82 Ohio Inf. Drummer. Inscriptions show that Wm. Maurice Tumbleson was the infant son of R.J. and Georgia M. Tumbleson. Philippa Doyle was the "loving wife of John M. Doyle."
