William Alfred Barrow Sr., 74, a former Carl Junction resident, died Monday, December 6, 1999, at University Hospital, Columbia. Mr. Barrow was born on Feb. 14, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of William and Alice Entristle barrow. He served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific and Atlantic from 1942 to 1948. After the service, he was a machinist in Mobile and Birmingham, Alabama and in La Center, Kentucky for 10 years and was a tool and die maker in St. Louis for over 10 years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1978 and his Master of Education degree in 1980 from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He received his Specialist in Education degree from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas. He taught vocational education at South County Technical School, St. Louis, for 8 years and completed his teaching career as a Associate Professor of Manufacturing Engineering at Pittsburg State University in 1992.
He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church, Columbia an longtime former member of First Baptist Church, Webb city, the American Vocational Association, Missouri State Teachers Association, Society of Engineering Education, Honor Society of Phi Kapp Phi, a former Life Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow and scoutmaster. He was past president of the St. Louis County Chapter of the Missouri State Teachers association and the local Joplin Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and served on a nation committee of the American Vocational Association.
He married Eloise Jackson on May 18, 1946, in Mobile. She survives. Additional survivors include two sons William A., and Robert M. Barrow, four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Webb City. The Rev. Bob Easton and the Rev. Don Laughlin will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery with Military Rites performed by Military Funeral Honors Team from the VFW Post 4142 and the American Legion Post 163. Pallbearers will be Gary Stover, Ethan Stover, Robert M. Barrow, Benje Barrow, Nathan Barrow and James W. Barrow. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Simpson Funeral Home Webb City. Contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, Webb City.
