James "Jake" T. Coomes, 84, of 8555 Possum Trot Road, Owensboro, died Friday, February 5, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. He was born in Daviess County, was a retired farmer and was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sarah Agnes Knott Coomes; five sons, Thurman Coomes of Reed, David "Bucky" Coomes of St. Joseph, Anthony Coomes of Monroe City, IN, Frank Coomes of Richland, OH, and Robert Coomes of Vincennes, IN; two daughters, Sarah Ann Dant of St. Joseph and Janice Devers of Vincennes; 23 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Waltrude Higdon of Owensboro; a half brother, Thomas E. Coomes of Owensboro; and a half sister, Bernadett Howard of Owensboro. [Survivors include four half sisters, including Theresa Brafchak of Medina, OH, Genevieve Sharpton of Dewey, OK, and Cecilia Farrell of Holland, MI.] Services are at noon Monday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in St. Joseph. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Joseph. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
