John, who resided in Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Corporal with a Anti-Tank Company, 382nd Regiment, 96th Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

As a boy he attended St. Hedwig's School in Wilmington, and Wilmington High School, where he was a forward on the school basketball team. He was employed as a shipfitter at the shipyards of the Pusey and Jones Corporation in Wilmington.

He enlisted in the Army on December 18, 1942 in Camden, New Jersey. After John entered the service his wife and son moved back to Camden, New Jersey with her family.

John was "Killed In Action" on Leyte in the Philippine Islands during the war.

He had served the Army for one year and ten months at the time of his death and was decorated with a "Bronze Star" and Purple Heart.
