James' remains were recovered and identified in 2009. He is now interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

James served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-24D #42-40886, 64th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Middlesex County, Massachusetts prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on September 3, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a cranemen, derrickmen, hoistmen, and shovelmen and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #42-40886 took off, with a crew of 11, from 7 Mile Drome, Central Province, Papua New Guinea on a night radar mission looking for Japanese shipping in the Bismarck Sea off of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.

They were last contacted by radio and were not seen nor heard from again. The entire crew was lost.

In 1982 this B-24 was found. They had crashed near Mount Eiyawaiy and Engati in Morobe Province during the war.

James was first declared "Missing In Action" and his status was changed to "Killed In Action" when his remains were recovered.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
