He enlisted in the Army on October 20, 1942 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Musician and also as Single, without dependents.
He was first declared as "Missing In Action" when his plane was shot down by fighters during Mission 216 to Steyr, Austria. The plane crashed at St. Valentin, Austria on February 23, 1944.
Russell was later declared as "Killed In Action".
