After a year, he found himself without enough money to continue his studies and for a period taught in the public schools. He graduated from Allegheny College in 1857. In July 1859 he sailed to India and began a remarkable career of service to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Southeast Asia. Elected Missionary Bishop of India and Malaysia in 1888, he founded the Calcutta Boys School, which flourishes today.
