Charles, who resided at 507 West Twenty-Sixth Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Staff Sergeant and Tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator (#41-29544), 68th Bomber Squadron, 44th Bomber Group, Eighth Air Force, U.S. Army Air Force in England during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army on November 9, 1940 in Wilmington, Delaware and was noted as Single, without dependents.

Charles was declared "Missing In Action" when while returning from a mission over Munich, Germany his plane was so damaged that the Pilot landed it in the North Sea. Charles is believed to have drowned since he did not get out of the plane prior to it sinking.

He had served the Air Force for three years and eight months at the time of his death.

He was decorated with the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, Citation of Honor, and the Purple Heart.

S/Sgt Banning served in both the Pacific and European theaters of operation in WWII. He was present at Wheeler Field on Dec 07, 1941 during the Japanese attack.
