US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

John Norton Thompson enlisted in the Marine Corps in the spring of 1943 from Iowa City, Iowa. Completed recruit training at MCB San Diego. April 1943 assigned schooling in Aviation Ordnance and Aircraft Armorer for over a year at Aviation Training Squadron 131, MCAS Kearney Mesa, CA, Marine Aviation Detachment, Naval Air Technical Training Center, Norman, Oklahoma and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Base Defense Air Group 42 (MBDAG 42) MCAS Santa Barbara (Goleta), CA. Promoted to Private First Class, Corporal and Sergeant during that year.

April 1944 assigned Marine Fighting Squadron 214 (VMF 214), Marine Air Group 11 (MAG 11), MCAS Santa Barbara, CA. June 1944 promoted to Staff Sergeant. 4 February 1945 embarked USS FRANKLIN (CV-13) at San Francisco. After training exercises and pilot qualification operations in Hawaii, manevered with a Naval Task Force to conduct strikes on the Japanese Mainland.

19 March 1945 a Japanese bomber hit the USS Franklin off the coast of Japan. There were 31 Armed and fueled aircraft on the flight deck. The resulting explosions and fires Killed 807 and Wounded 487 Marines and Sailors on aboard.

Killed in Action, Buried at Sea.
