CHAMBERLAIN, LeRoy E.
Portrait & Biographical Record Winnebago & Boone Cos., IL. Chicago: Biographical Pub. Co., 1892, pp 574-577
This practical and intelligent farmer is a native of LeRoy Township, Boone County [IL], and makes his home on the splendid farm where his birth occurred 03 Jun 1854. He has been successful so far in his farming operations, which can be attributed to his persistent industry, his wise forethought and his prudent thrift.

The father of our subject, Joseph CHAMERLAIN, was a native of Delaware County, NY, having been born 07 May 1813. The lady to whom he was married bore the name of Sallie P. HOVEY, and is also a native NY, where she was born in Apr 1822. They both accompanied their respective parents West when young, and were married in Boone County in Oct 1839, and commenced life on a claim of a half section of government land. [For additional information about this HOVEY family, see the biographies of Mrs. Mariam D. TAYLOR and Nathan H. WOOSTER.]

Joseph CHAMBERLAIN, the grandfather of our subject, was a native of Brattleboro, VT, where he was an agriculturalist and a man of means. He lost his fortune, however, by going security for a friend. He removed to NY in an early day, but died in middle life, leaving a family of five sons and one daughter, all of whom grew to mature years in NY State. In the fall of 1836 the widowed mother and three sons, Carman, Alfred, and Lewis, came to IL and located on the place where our subject was born. The mother was Eunice BLAKESLEY, of CT, and lived to reach the advanced age of 98 years. Her death occurred in 1875, in LeRoy, Boone County [IL], and her remains lie buried in Round Prairie Cemetery.

[p 577] He of whom we write is one in a family of four sons and six daughters, two of whom did in infancy. Those living at the present time are Helen M., Mrs. E. Reve, who resides in Sterling, NE; Eliza, Mrs. E. REVE, who resides in NE; Harry D., a farmer in Dakota, and Horace M., who is engaged in the butcher's business at Byron, IL. One son, William Wallace, duirng the late was a membr of the 37th IL Infantry, and died of smallpox in 1863 at Brownsville, TX.

The father of our subject departed this life 04 Nov 1891, when 78 years of age. He was a hard-working, industrious man, and by prudent management accumulated a handsome property, and at his death left his family an estate valued at $10,000. Our subject was reared on the home farm, which has since been his home. He was married in 1881 to Miss Kittie BRETT, of Whitewater [Walworth County], WI, and to them have been born five children: Maude E., Harry, Selah, LeRoy and Floyd. Mr. CHAMBERLAIN has twenty acres of excellent land in this township, and 160 in Dakota. The old home farm was sold by his father to a Mr. HOVEY. In social matters he is a member of the Odd Fellows, and has adopted the political views of the Republican party, being active in promoting its success.
