Joseph Lynn was born in Shelby County, TN to John Scott Lynn and Nancy Elizabeth Eugenia Dandridge. He learned telegraphy at an early age which led him to a career with the L&N and later Illinois Central Railroad. He served as the station master at Rives until his retirement. He also owned and operated a farm in the Gibbs community. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
