William served with the U.S. Merchant Marines aboard the S.S. J.N. Pew and was killed in action aboard the tanker which was sunk in the Caribbean. His remains were never recovered, but Seaman Daukas's name is listed on the Wall of Honor at the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial at San Pedro, California. The memorial also includes a large bronze sculpture.The black granite wall lists the names of merchant marines lost at sea during war.
