At a young age, Mary joined Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Bamberg. Upon moving to New York, she became an active member of Macedonia AME Church in Flushing, Queens, New York City. Upon relocating back to her home state, she reaffirmed her membership with Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Mary was married to the late Welrose E. Bartley.
Surviving are two sons, Welrose E. (Gloria) Bartley of Virginia Beach, VA and Michael E. (Teranesa) Bartley of Orangeburg; brother, James (Marie) Washington of Columbia; sister, Minnie Rice of Syracuse, NY; three grandchildren, Christopher, Camille and Dominique.
