Betty Francis Trinkle Freeman, 69, of Roanoke, died Tuesday afternoon, September 7, 1999 at home. She was the daughter of Charles W., Jr. and Myrtle H. Francis and granddaughter of C. W. Francis, founder of the oldest real estate firm in the Roanoke Valley, C. W. Francis & Son, Inc. Mrs. Freeman was graduated from Jefferson High School in 1947 and Hollins College in 1982. She was formerly married to the late James L. Trinkle and widow of Charles N. Freeman. Betty was very active in community, civic and church affairs, including: being president of the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley in 1964-65 at the time of the purchase of Cherry Hill by the League and the Fine Arts Center, a member of the Mill Mountain Garden Club, Second Presbyterian Church, and was involved in helping to bring special education to the Roanoke Valley for children with learning disabilities. She was a devoted, loving mother, grandmother and friend to many, whose charm, brightness and smile will be long remembered. Surviving are her three sons, James Lewis Trinkle, Jr., William Francis Trinkle and his partner, Scott K. H. Bessent, David Ball Trinkle and his wife, Ann Bondurant Trinkle; three grandchildren, Catherine Elizabeth Trinkle, Samuel Clayton Trinkle and Ella Francis Trinkle, her Yorkshire Terrier, Misty and many loving family members and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at Second Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m. Friday, September 10, 1999 with the Reverend Dr. George C. Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to The Betty Trinkle Freeman Scholarship Fund at Hollins University, P.O. Box 9629, Roanoke, Va. established in 1982 to assist students returning to college to complete their degree.
