Lydia Reynolds Akers, 101, of Christiansburg, Va., went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 7, 2010, from a short illness. Mrs. Akers was born in Roanoke County on July 20, 1908. She attended and graduated from National Business College in 1929 to 1932. On August 12, 1933, she married Howard N. Akers (deceased) and moved to Wheeling, W.Va. After moving back to Christiansburg in 1940, Mrs. Akers took a school secretary job for the Montgomery County School Board in 1958. She worked in that position from 1958 to 1974. Mrs. Akers was an active member of Cambria Baptist Church for 35 years and later a member of Trinity Baptist Church, both in Christiansburg. She is survived by her daughters, Caroline Gerald and Janet Sutphin; her grandchildren, Karen Barnes, Sharon Gillis, Larry Gerald, Gary Gerald, Deneen Jarrell, Steve Sutphin, and Dale Sutphin; her greatgrandchildren, Adam Gerald, Brittany Gerald, Isaac Barnes, Samuel Barnes, Brooke Jarrell, Megan Jarrell, Carley Gillis, Katelyn Sutphin, Ashley Sutphin, Michael Sutphin, Emily Sutphin; her greatgreat-grandchild, Kaylee Jarrell; two half sisters; and an half brother. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2010, at the Horne Funeral Home. The funeral will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg with interment to follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Gideon Memorial Bible Program, P.O. Box 366, Christiansburg, Va. 24068.
