Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company B, 67th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 126, 1862. Transferred to Company I, he led his command until he was honorably mustered out upon the expiration of his term of service on October 25, 1864.

He was the son of Daniel Cornwell (1804-1883) and Elizabeth Thompson (1810-1903).
